Artist Bio

Vitória Monteiro aka veto (b. Brazil) is an artist, cultural worker and facilitator based in the unseeded territories of the sḵwx̱wú7mesh, sel̓íl̓witulh, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm nations, or Vancouver. Their work has been exhibited at Artspeak Gallery (2024), CityScape Community ArtSpace (2023), Mónica Reyes Gallery (2022), Massy Arts Society (2022), among others. veto holds a BFA from Simon Fraser University and is the current Board President of grunt gallery as well as the Artistic Engagement Director at WePress Community Art Space.

Artist Statment

veto explores the intricacies of language abstraction, the anti-archive and the reprocessing of information. Navigating the fields where information dwells, veto's work provides a new realm for knowledge to co-exist that is silent, inarticulate, and abstract. Through a process of "cannibalizing" information—a nod to Oswald de Andrade’s Manifesto Antropófago (Cannibalist Manifesto)—veto absorbs, transforms, and recontextualizes cultural, environmental, and personal influences. In doing so, they generate new forms of understanding that challenge traditional archives and systems of categorization. Their community practice centres accessible, joyful, and more tender approaches to existing within art and cultural spheres. As a facilitator, they reimagine work culture and modes of productivity, shifting towards cultivating workspaces that prioritize care. By exploring ways of incorporating play, stimming, and self-expression these spaces, veto roots these shifts as powerful acts of resistance.
